This print shows the opening of the massive Stanhope and Tyne Railway staiths (wharves) at South Shields in 1834. Ceremonial barges attending the opening are at the front of the view. Chaldrons (wagons) are being towed by horses along rails on the staiths to the five loading lifts. The first ship to be loaded from the new staiths was the brig Sally. The railway transported coal from Pontop, near Consett, and limestone from Stanhope. It also carried passenger coaches, and was the first public railway on Tyneside. The staiths closed when Tyne Dock at South Shields opened in 1859.); eTyne & Wear Archives & Museums; Scottish, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph print, titled "The Inauguration of Stanhope and Tyne Drops, South Shields, September 1834" takes us back to a significant moment in history. Created by the talented artist William A. Kidd and published by Kelly, this artwork measures 26.9x59.7 cm and is now part of the Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums collection. The print beautifully captures the grand opening of the remarkable Stanhope and Tyne Railway staiths in South Shields during September 1834. As we gaze upon it, we can see ceremonial barges gracefully floating at the forefront of the scene while chaldrons (wagons) are being expertly towed along rails on the staiths by horses towards five loading lifts. A notable highlight depicted in this artwork is that it showcases an important milestone for transportation in Tyneside – as it was not only used for coal from Pontop near Consett but also transported limestone from Stanhope. Moreover, this railway was groundbreaking as it carried passenger coaches, making it the first public railway in Tyneside's history. As our eyes wander across this detailed lithograph print, we cannot help but imagine witnessing these historical events firsthand - feeling a sense of awe as ships were loaded from these new staiths for the very first time; with Sally brig being honored as its inaugural vessel. Although these impressive staiths closed when Tyne Dock opened in 1859, this artwork serves as a testament to their significance and impact on transportation during that era. Through Kidd's artistic talent and attention to detail combined with Day and Haghe's lithography skills - we are granted a glimpse into an important chapter of South Shield's past through this mesmerizing piece of art.
