EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning portrait print captures the majestic 'Beurs van Amsterdam', a powerful Indiaman built in 1654 with an impressive armament of 52 guns. Originally serving the Dutch States in 1665, this ship was later returned to the East India Company in 1666.
Painted by Willem van de Velde, the Younger, this artwork showcases the 'Beurs van Amsterdam' from its starboard broadside, with sails and courses drying in the wind. The fore and main yards are lowered halfway, while a driver is being hoisted up. A flag proudly flies at the main mast, symbolizing strength and pride.
The intricate details of this piece include an enlarged drawing of the upper-works on the back of the print, as well as a fainter sketch from just before reaching the starboard beam. The inscription on the back reads 'de beurs van amsterdam... [cut] / kompani van amsterdam', linking this vessel to its origins with precision.
Signed by W.V.V.J in the lower left-hand corner, this artwork is not only a visual delight but also a historical treasure that transports us back to a time when ships like these ruled over vast oceans with grace and power.
