Portrait of a small Dutch merchant ship, c.1665 (graphite, grey wash)
7342097 Portrait of a small Dutch merchant ship, c.1665 (graphite, grey wash) by Velde, Willem van de, the Elder (1611-93); 43.2x36 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Willem van de Velde, the Elder
Shown in a light air from astern, and viewed from before the starboard beam with the mainsail loose in the brails, lateen mizzen half brailed up and topsail and topgallant loosed. The foremast and top are shown, the fore course and topsail being added subsequently. The anchor is shown a-cockbill. The ship has a plain fiddle-ended beak, an ensign on a staff, and one gun on the broadside forward and two aft. Two men are on deck. Doubtfully attributed to the Elder, with perhaps some pencil work by the Younger, and very approximately dated on style. It was later used for a picture now in the Wallace Collection (no. 246).); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning graphite and grey wash portrait captures the essence of a small Dutch merchant ship from the 17th century, expertly crafted by Willem van de Velde, the Elder. The ship is depicted in a light air from astern, with intricate details such as the mainsail loose in the brails and the lateen mizzen half brailed up. The foremast and top are shown with precision, showcasing the skill of the artist.
The composition includes one gun on each side of the ship, two men on deck, and an anchor a-cockbill. The fiddle-ended beak and ensign on a staff add to the authenticity of this maritime scene. While there is some doubt regarding attribution to van de Velde, it is clear that this piece exemplifies his mastery of naval artistry.
This work not only serves as a visual representation of Dutch naval history but also highlights the importance of merchant ships during this era. The attention to detail in every aspect of this drawing reflects both artistic talent and historical accuracy. A true masterpiece that transports viewers back in time to experience life at sea aboard a small Dutch merchant vessel.
