An Amsterdam ship, possibly an Indiaman, of about 50 guns, c.1670 (graphite)

7342057 An Amsterdam ship, possibly an Indiaman, of about 50 guns, c.1670 (graphite) by Velde, Willem van de, the Elder (1611-93); 32.4x48.8 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Willem van de Velde, the Elder
It is viewed from the port quarter with, on the broadside, eleven guns on the gun deck, nine on the upper deck and on the quarterdeck. There is a full-length figure of a man holding a sword on the tafferel. On the rail above are the arms of Amsterdam supported by two lions. Three shields across the upper counter bear the arms of Overijssel, Holland and Gelderland. Two shields on the lower counter bear (port) the crossed anchors for the Admiralty of Amsterdam and (starboard) the quartered and inescutcheoned arms of Prince Hendrik.
This is not the 'Prins Hendrik' (1653), nor the 'Prins Hendrik Casimir' (1665), respectively of the Admiralties of the Maas and Friesland. It is identified by another offset from the same original, now in the Boymans Museum, Rottterdam (215-1139), which is inscribed 'oudt prins henderick van amsterdam' (the old 'Prins Hendrik' of Amsterdam). This is one of three tracings in the collection (this one in reverse) from accurate originals either by the Elder or Younger van de Velde. They have been approximately dated by the style. The other two are PAH1795 and PAH5017.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning graphite print captures the majestic beauty of an Amsterdam ship, possibly an Indiaman, from around 1670. The intricate details of the ship are meticulously depicted, showcasing its impressive size and armament of about 50 guns. The artist, Willem van de Velde, the Elder, has skillfully portrayed the vessel from the port quarter, giving viewers a glimpse of eleven guns on the gun deck, nine on the upper deck, and more on the quarterdeck. A full-length figure holding a sword stands proudly on the tafferel, adding a touch of human presence to this maritime scene. The arms of Amsterdam are prominently displayed on the rail above, flanked by two fierce lions. Additional shields bear the arms of various regions and entities associated with this powerful ship. This particular vessel is not to be confused with other similarly named ships from different admiralties. It is identified as 'oudt prins henderick van amsterdam,' providing historical context to its significance in Dutch naval history. Overall, this print serves as a valuable historical document that showcases both artistic talent and nautical expertise. The attention to detail and accuracy in depicting this Amsterdam ship make it a truly remarkable piece for any maritime enthusiast or art lover alike.
