Portrait of the 'Dartmouth', c.1675 (graphite, grey wash)
7342068 Portrait of the 'Dartmouth', c.1675 (graphite, grey wash) by Velde, Willem van de, the Younger (1633-1707); 28.6x53.9 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Willem van de Velde, the Younger
The 'Dartmouth' viewed from the port quarter and carries, on the broadside, nine guns on the gun deck, two forward and four aft on the upper deck and two on the quarterdeck. She has square decorated ports. Robinson identifies this as a 32-gun ship (rather than a 30) based on the number of upper deck guns, making it either the 'Sapphire', 'Success', 'Swan', 'Mermaid' or 'Dartmouth': of two others the 'Eagle' was made a fireship in 1667 and the 'Sorlings' was lost in 1667. The quarter galleries are early (so it is unlikely to be the later 'Sapphire' or 'Swan') and since they and the stern galleries are very similar to the 'Portsmouth' (PAH1841) it may be the Portsmouth-built 'Dartmouth'.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning portrait of the 'Dartmouth' by Willem van de Velde, the Younger, captures the essence of a 17th-century naval vessel with exquisite detail. The ship is depicted from the port quarter, showcasing its nine guns on the gun deck and square decorated ports. With two guns forward and four aft on the upper deck, as well as two on the quarterdeck, this ship exudes power and strength.
Art historian Robinson identifies this ship as a 32-gun vessel based on the number of upper deck guns, narrowing it down to potential candidates such as the 'Sapphire', 'Success', 'Swan', 'Mermaid', or indeed, the 'Dartmouth' itself. The early quarter galleries suggest that it may be the Portsmouth-built 'Dartmouth', adding historical significance to this already remarkable piece.
The meticulous graphite and grey wash technique used by van de Velde brings out every intricate detail of this majestic ship, making it a true masterpiece in maritime art. Displayed at the National Maritime Museum in London, this print allows viewers to immerse themselves in a bygone era of naval exploration and conquest. Truly a work of art that captures both history and beauty in one frame.
