EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning sleeved waistcoat from the early 18th century. Created by an unknown English School artist, this exquisite piece of clothing measures 105 cm in length and is currently housed at the Manchester Art Gallery in the UK. Crafted from fawn silk brocade, this waistcoat features a unique "bizarre" design woven with brown, pale blue, and silver thread. The lining is made of fawn silk with a figured stripe pattern while the interlining consists of brown linen. The front section flares at the sides below the waist and fastens all the way from neck to hem using 43 small silver thread buttons and buttonholes stitched with silver thread (excluding the lowest ten buttonholes). The waistcoat also boasts two side pockets made of brown linen, each featuring a vertical slit under a hanging flap that widens towards the bottom and is secured at its tip. Additionally, there are open side seams below hip level and silk tape binding around the neck. The long sleeves are divided into two sections and fasten from wrist to elbow using six buttons. A piece of linen inscribed with "Fassett, Kingston on Thames" in ink is stitched to the back lining. This remarkable garment offers us a glimpse into fashion trends during this period while highlighting exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail.
