The Camp of the 1st Division looking North towards the Camp of the 2nd Division
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating lithograph print by William Simpson, depicting a scene from the Crimean War. The image showcases the harsh winter conditions faced by British soldiers outside the fortified Russian port of Sebastopol. In this vividly colored print, Simpson skillfully captures the desolate landscape covered in snow, with soldiers trudging through it. The camp of the 1st Division can be seen in the foreground, while in the distance lies the camp of the 2nd Division and beyond that, towering over everything else, are Inkermann Heights. The lithograph is part of a series titled "The Seat of War in East - First Series" which was published by Paul and Dominic Colnaghi and Company on March 19th, 1855. Simpson was commissioned to travel to Crimea during the war and create sketches based on his observations alongside British troops. His attention to detail and ability to convey emotion through his artwork made him one of Britain's most renowned war artists. This particular print serves as a testament to both Simpson's talent as an artist and also provides viewers with a glimpse into what life was like for soldiers during this grueling conflict. It stands as a historical record capturing not only military strategy but also human resilience amidst challenging circumstances.
