EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of William GGV Vernon Harcourt, an influential figure in English politics during the late 19th century. The image showcases Harcourt, a distinguished lawyer and Liberal statesman, seated outdoors with a mischievous smile on his face. His impressive beard adds to his dignified appearance as he gazes away thoughtfully. Harcourt's political achievements are highlighted in this portrait. Serving as Home Secretary from 1880 to 1885 and later becoming Chancellor of the Exchequer in two separate terms (1886 and 1892-1895), he introduced death duties which left a lasting impact on British taxation policy. As leader of the Liberal Party and then Opposition from 1896 to 1898, Harcourt was known for his wit and intelligence. The artist Edward Linley Sambourne masterfully incorporates animal themes into this caricature-like illustration. The pun on Harcourt's name cleverly labels him as "Harecaught" alluding to his introduction of the Ground Game Act that granted equal rights for land occupiers to hunt game. This anthropomorphic portrayal adds an element of fun while highlighting one of Harcourt's significant legislative accomplishments. Overall, this black-and-white engraving from Punch magazine's Fancy Portraits series offers a unique glimpse into the life and personality of William GGV Vernon Harcourt – a prominent politician who played an instrumental role in shaping British history during his time in office.
