EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Singing-bird box, dating back to around 1840. Crafted by the talented Charles Bruguier, this exquisite piece is made of gold, diamonds, and enamel. Measuring at 9.1x5.7x3.1 cm, it currently resides in a private collection. The singing bird box is an extraordinary creation that combines mechanical ingenuity with artistic beauty. The brass movement inside features intricate details such as chain fusee, stacked cams, fly regulator, and rectangular bellow. The entire box is adorned with engine-turned and engraved foliage decorations. The sides of the box are skillfully engraved with classical landscapes using the "taille-douce" technique while the cover boasts chased and engraved acanthus leaves and foliage along with black and turquoise-blue champleve enamel scroll decoration. A rose-cut diamond ring adds a touch of elegance to the black enamel bezel. Opening the hinged oval cover reveals a stunning painted polychrome enamel miniature signed by Prochet depicting putti (cherubic figures), a dove, and flowers - truly capturing the essence of nature's beauty within this small treasure chest. Upon opening further, one discovers a finely pierced and engraved scroll decorated grille that releases a colorful plumed bird capable of rotating on its axis while chirping melodiously. Its wings flap gracefully as it wags its tail, turns its head, and opens its beak in perfect synchronization. This remarkable singing-bird box bears not only Charles Bruguier's signature but also inscriptions indicating its origin in Geneva (GenAve) along with references to repairs made by G. J Jaccard in New York City (298 Broadway). It stands as both an exceptional work of artistry and testament to fine craftsmanship from another era.
