EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a defining moment in history - the Bristol Riots of 1831. Painted by William W. Wheatley, this oil on paper artwork depicts the chaotic scene of the gaol burning and St Pauls Church in Bedminster during the riots. The unrest was sparked by the rejection of the second Reform Bill by the House of Lords, which aimed to address corruption within electoral districts. Local magistrate Sir Charles Wetherell, an opponent of reform, visited Bristol to open new Assize Courts on October 29th. However, his presence only fueled anger among protesters who chased him through Queen Square to the Mansion House. Over three days, a furious mob consisting of around 500-600 young men wreaked havoc across Bristol. The rioters looted and destroyed private homes and properties including Robert Gray's palace - Bishop of Bristol at that time - as well as demolishing parts of the gaol. Tragically, four rioters lost their lives during these events while four others were hanged despite a petition signed by 10,000 people pleading for mercy. Wheatley's painting serves as a powerful reminder of this tumultuous period in British history when political tensions boiled over into violence on the streets. Preserved at Bristol Museum and Art Gallery since its purchase in 1921, this artwork offers us a glimpse into one city's struggle for social change amidst political turmoil.
