Commissioned by the Empire Marketing Board and printed by St. Michael's Press Ltd for HMSO
Manchester Art Gallery holds a fascinating collection of artist-designed posters, Commissioned by the British government's Empire Marketing Board between 1926 and 1933. The EMB's main function was to increase sales of Empire-grown and Empire-made goods throughout Great Britain, its Dominions and its Colonies. One aspect of its activities was a poster campaign that was designed to turn Britons into Empire-conscious consumers.
Over 200 posters were acquired by Manchester Art Gallery in the 1930s. The posters strong images illustrate the Empire's people, places and products. However, for a contemporary audience, the posters sometimes express uncomfortable beliefs and raise difficult questions about the legacies of the Empire today.); © Manchester Art Gallery

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Butter and Cheese, from the series Buy New Zealand Produce" by Frank Newbould showcases a vibrant display of colors and textures. The image, part of a larger collection commissioned by the British government's Empire Marketing Board in the 1920s and 1930s, aims to promote Empire-grown and Empire-made goods throughout Great Britain, its Dominions, and Colonies. In this particular artwork, Newbould skillfully captures the essence of two staple food items - butter and cheese. The rich hues of yellow depict luscious blocks of butter while the creamy white tones represent delectable rounds of cheese. These products symbolize not only sustenance but also economic prosperity within the vast British Empire. Displayed at Manchester Art Gallery in the UK, this piece is part of their remarkable collection featuring artist-designed posters that were once used as tools for promoting an empire-conscious consumer culture. While these posters offer insight into historical marketing strategies, they also raise important questions about the legacy left behind by colonialism. The juxtaposition between admiration for artistic technique and reflection on uncomfortable beliefs makes this artwork both visually striking and thought-provoking. It serves as a reminder to contemporary audiences to critically examine our past while appreciating art's ability to capture complex narratives.
