EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures a piece of history in the form of a beautiful Scottish dress from the mid-19th century. The dress, originating from Lanarkshire, East Kilbride, was most likely worn by either Lilias Reid or her younger sister Elizabeth Reid at Wester Kittochside Farm during the years 1846-1849.
Made of silk and cotton with intricate wood and metal detailing, this dress features a vibrant green and pink color scheme woven with delicate patterns of roses and flowers. The bodice is adorned with twelve toggles down the center front and pleated in a V-shape from shoulder to center-front, while the three-quarter length sleeves are trimmed with black braid, lace, and glass beads.
The full-length skirt adds an elegant touch to this already exquisite garment. This piece not only showcases the fashion trends of its time but also tells a story of the women who wore it. It is now preserved in Glasgow Museums as part of their collection, serving as a reminder of Scotland's rich sartorial heritage.
