EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the historic Dukes Theatre, Dorset Gardens, engraved by W. Sherwin in 1673. The image takes us back to the vibrant atmosphere of Restoration London, where this iconic theater stood as a testament to the city's rich theatrical heritage. Designed by the renowned Sir Christopher Wren and built by actor Thomas Betterton and the Davenant family in 1671, the Dukes Theatre was a prominent cultural hub during its time. Originally founded by Sir William Davenant, who also held the esteemed position of Poet Laureate until his death in 1670, this theater played a significant role in shaping English drama. Known under various names such as Duke of Yorks Theatre or Queens Theatre throughout its existence, it witnessed historical events that shaped its identity. When King Charles II passed away in 1685 and his brother James II ascended to the throne, it became known as Queen's Theatre after James' second wife Mary of Modena. The Dukes Company called this magnificent venue home for many years until their successor company took over after 1682. With its grand architecture and illustrious history intertwined with royal connections, this engraving transports us back to an era when theater reigned supreme in London's cultural landscape.
