EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we are transported to the enchanting world of Persian folklore. A tortoise bravely carries a scorpion on its back as they navigate across a serene river. The scene is taken from "Lights of Canopus" an exquisite ink and pigment artwork created by the Persian School in the 19th century. This particular piece is part of Ms. W. 599, a copy of Anvar-i Suhayli (the Lights of Canopus), which is a Persian version of Mirza Rahim's adaptation of Kalilah wa-Dimnah (The Fables of Bidpay). These ancient Indian animal fables, known as Panchatantra, were collected by anthropomorphized animals living in India. The painting depicts Burzuyah, a Persian physician who embarks on a mission to India where he discovers these fascinating stories told by the animal inhabitants themselves. As we gaze at this illustration, we can almost feel ourselves being transported into their magical world. Beyond its aesthetic beauty lies deeper meaning - morality and human behavior are explored through these animal characters that have been anthropomorphized. The tortoise's selfless act demonstrates compassion and empathy towards even the most unlikely companions. With its rich colors and intricate details, this artwork serves as both an artistic masterpiece and a visual representation of timeless wisdom passed down through generations. It reminds us that sometimes unexpected alliances can lead to extraordinary journeys filled with valuable life lessons. Displayed at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore
