Banaue Rice Terraces

The Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1995, the first-ever property to be included in the cultural landscape category of the World Heritage List. The majority of the Rice Terraces were constructed in a short time span after the Spanish arrival to the Philippines. The Ifugao Rice Terraces reach a higher altitude and were built on steeper slopes than many other terraces. The Ifugao complex of stone or mud walls and the careful carving of the natural contours of hills and mountains to make terraced pond fields, coupled with the development of intricate irrigation systems, harvesting water from the forests of the mountain tops, and an elaborate farming system. The Ifugao Rice Terraces illustrate the remarkable ability of human culture to adapt to new social and climate pressures as well as to implement and develop new ideas and technologies. The rice terraces of the Cordilleras are the only monuments in the Philippines that show no evidence of having been influenced by colonial cultures. Owing to the difficult terrain, the Cordillera tribes are among the few peoples of the Philippines who have successfully resisted any foreign domination and have preserved their authentic tribal culture. The history of the terraces is intertwined with that of its people, their culture, and their traditional practices

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring beauty of the Banaue Rice Terraces, a UNESCO World Heritage site located in the Philippine Cordilleras. The terraces, which were constructed after the Spanish arrival to the Philippines, showcase the remarkable ingenuity and adaptability of human culture. The Ifugao Rice Terraces stand out among other terraced landscapes due to their higher altitude and steeper slopes. Built with stone or mud walls and carefully carved into hills and mountains, these terraces are an intricate farming system that utilizes elaborate irrigation systems. What makes these rice terraces truly unique is their lack of influence from colonial cultures. Unlike many other monuments in the Philippines, they have successfully resisted foreign domination and preserved their authentic tribal culture. The history of these terraces is deeply intertwined with that of its people - their traditions, practices, and way of life. In this stunning print by Michael Gerard Santos Ceralde from Fine Art Storehouse, viewers can immerse themselves in the breathtaking scenery of this cultural landscape. It serves as a reminder not only of nature's grandeur but also humanity's ability to adapt to new challenges while preserving ancient wisdom.
