EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable Davy lamps, a symbol of safety in the treacherous depths of coal mines. Published in 1895, these wood engravings beautifully depict three variations of this ingenious invention. On the left side, we see two types of Davy lamps - one designed specifically for miners (lamp 1) and another used in laboratories (lamp 2), both featuring a hydrogen flame created by Dr. Frank Clowes from Nothingham. On the right side, we are introduced to yet another variation of this life-saving lamp with a methyl alcohol flame. The Davy lamp revolutionized mining practices when it was invented by Sir Humphry Davy back in 1815. Its design includes enclosing the flame within a mesh screen, preventing any potential explosions caused by flammable gases like methane or firedamp. The intricate wood engravings were masterfully crafted by Louis Poyet, a renowned French illustrator and engraver who lived between 1846 and 1913. His attention to detail brings out the elegance and functionality of these historic safety devices. As we gaze upon this vintage print, we are reminded of the bravery and ingenuity required to navigate through dark underground tunnels filled with danger at every turn. These Davy lamps stand as timeless symbols not only for their practical purpose but also for their contribution towards ensuring miner's safety during an era fraught with perilous conditions deep beneath our feet.
