EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the magnificent Metal Sculpture, known as the RSPA Fountain on Richmond Hill in Richmond Upon Thames, London. Crafted with exquisite Victorian metalwork and adorned with embossed gold leaf commemorative text, this sculpture is a true testament to the artistry of its time. Commissioned in 1891 by the local branch of the RSPCA, this monumental piece was created to honor and remember the tireless efforts of cattle and horses that climbed their way up Richmond Hill. Serving both as a decorative fountain and a drinking trough for these hardworking animals, it stood as a symbol of gratitude for their invaluable contributions. Notably, this remarkable sculpture also featured a thoughtful addition—a drinking trough for dogs at ground level. This inclusion further exemplifies the compassion and care extended towards all creatures by both the artist Howard Pugh (Marais) and those who commissioned his work. As we gaze upon this photo print, we are transported back in time to an era where craftsmanship reigned supreme. The intricate details carved into every inch of this metal masterpiece remind us of our rich history while simultaneously evoking feelings of awe and admiration. It serves as a poignant reminder that even through art, we can pay homage to those who have made significant impacts on our lives—both human and animal alike.
