Great 20th Century Explorers
The semi-rigid N-class airship Norge (Norwegian for Norway ), which was used by the Amundsen-Ellsworth-Nobile Expedition to fly over the North Pole, lies on its side and deflates after landing, Teller, Alaska, May 13, 1926. Bad weather forced the craft to land in Teller and not return to Norway. Norwegian Roald Amundsen and Italian Umberto Nobile differed about who should receive the credit for the flight; Nobile because he was pilot, or Amundsen because he was the head of the expedition (American pilot Lincoln Ellsworth was the son of the expeditions backer, James Ellsworth). Two years later Amundsen disappeared while searching for Nobiles ill-fated Italia expedition to overfly the pole. (Photo by Pictorial Parade/Getty Images)
