Ifugao rice terraces
The Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1995, the first-ever property to be included in the cultural landscape category of the World Heritage List. The majority of the Rice Terraces were constructed in a short time span after the Spanish arrival to the Philippines. The Ifugao Rice Terraces reach a higher altitude and were built on steeper slopes than many other terraces. The Ifugao complex of stone or mud walls and the careful carving of the natural contours of hills and mountains to make terraced pond fields, coupled with the development of intricate irrigation systems, harvesting water from the forests of the mountain tops, and an elaborate farming system. The Ifugao Rice Terraces illustrate the remarkable ability of human culture to adapt to new social and climate pressures as well as to implement and develop new ideas and technologies. The rice terraces of the Cordilleras are the only monuments in the Philippines that show no evidence of having been influenced by colonial cultures. Owing to the difficult terrain, the Cordillera tribes are among the few peoples of the Philippines who have successfully resisted any foreign domination and have preserved their authentic tribal culture. The history of the terraces is intertwined with that of its people, their culture, and their traditional practices

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the breathtaking beauty of the Ifugao rice terraces, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1995. These terraces hold immense historical and cultural significance as they were constructed shortly after the Spanish arrival in the Philippines. What sets them apart is their higher altitude and steeper slopes compared to other terraces, demonstrating the remarkable adaptability of human culture. The Ifugao complex is a testament to human ingenuity, with its intricate irrigation systems that harvest water from mountain forests and careful carving of natural contours to create terraced pond fields. It represents an elaborate farming system that has stood the test of time. What makes these rice terraces truly unique is their lack of influence from colonial cultures, making them one-of-a-kind monuments in the Philippines. The Cordillera tribes who built and maintained these terraces have successfully resisted foreign domination, preserving their authentic tribal culture against all odds. As we admire this print by Michael Gerard Santos Ceralde from Fine Art Storehouse, we are reminded not only of nature's grandeur but also of humanity's ability to adapt and innovate in response to social and climate pressures. The history embedded within these terraces intertwines with that of its people - their traditions, practices, and unwavering connection to their land.
