circa 1853: An officer of the 74th Highlanders (later the 2nd Battalion Highland Light Infantry). Officially formed in 1777 by former Jacobite Lord MacLeod, son of the Earl of Cromarty and a Mackenzie by clan, the regiment was originally called MacLeods Highlanders and wore a kilt in Mackenzie tartan. The regiment became the Light Infantry in 1809 and in 1834 was granted permission to wear tartan trousers and plaids or shawls. Famous Highlanders include Piper George Clark who continued to play his bagpipes for his comrades during a battle despite being badly wounded in the thigh.
