The Zenkov cathedral (after the architect Zenkov), als know as the Ascension Cathedral is a Russian Orthodox cathedral in Panfilov Park in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The cathedral was completed in 1907 and is completely built of wood but without any nails. It stands 56 meters tall, and is claimed to be the second tallest wooden building in the world.
Building of the cathedral was completed in 1907.
After the Russian Revolution the cathedral was used to house the Central State Museum of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic.
The Russian Orthodox Church got back control of the church in 1995 and in 1997, after restoration work, the cathedral was reopened for religious services
