Heading Home

3rd September 1955: Two little boys head back to their remote house along a grassy track on the island of Lewis and Harris in the Outer Hebrides. Lewis and Harris are connected by an isthmus and considered to be a single island measuring 2, 134 square kilometres, which makes it the largest of the Western Isles. The island is 39 miles away from the Scottish mainland and separated by North Minch which may be crossed by ferry. Islanders mainly live by crofting and fishing although the hand-woven tweed made by Harris residents is renowned for its quality and is exported to customers all over the world. EDITORS COMMENTS
Heading Home: A Glimpse into Island Life in the Outer Hebrides". This photo print, captured by renowned photographer Bert Hardy, transports us back to a simpler time on the remote island of Lewis and Harris. The image depicts two young boys making their way along a grassy track towards their isolated house, nestled amidst the breathtaking landscapes of this Scottish archipelago. Lewis and Harris, considered as one entity despite being connected by an isthmus, boast vast expanses measuring 2,134 square kilometers - making it the largest among the Western Isles. Situated 39 miles away from mainland Scotland and separated by North Minch's treacherous waters, these islands have long relied on crofting and fishing for sustenance. The photograph also sheds light on another aspect of island life - the renowned hand-woven tweed made by skilled residents of Harris. This high-quality fabric has gained international acclaim and is exported worldwide. As we observe these two boys walking hand in hand against a backdrop of untouched beauty, we are reminded of the resilience and simplicity that characterizes life in this remote corner of Europe. Their journey symbolizes not only physical movement but also represents a deeper connection to home - a place where family ties are strong amidst isolation. Bert Hardy's lens captures both the innocence of childhood adventure and the ruggedness inherent to island living. This archival piece serves as a poignant reminder that even in our modern world, there are still places where tradition thrives alongside nature's grandeur.
