Glenfinnan

4th June 1955: The monument at Glenfinnan, at the head of Loch Shiel, Invernesshire, which marks the spot where Bonnie Prince Charlie (1720 - 1788) raised his familys standard (his grandfather was the deposed James II) at a gathering of Jacobite troops on August 19th 1745. The army he had organised for an attempt to reclaim the British throne was unsuccessful and the rebellion, known as the 45 Uprising, ended at Culloden where 1, 200 Scots died. Bonnie Prince Charlie went into hiding until Flora MacDonald helped him to escape to the continent where he spent the rest of his life. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the historic moment at Glenfinnan on June 4th, 1955. The image showcases the magnificent monument that stands proudly at the head of Loch Shiel in Invernesshire, Scotland. This very spot marks a significant event in Scottish history - it is where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his family's standard during the Jacobite uprising on August 19th, 1745. The photograph beautifully captures the isolated and serene landscape surrounding the monument. With no people present, we are left to contemplate the weight of history that this place holds. The architectural column stands tall against a backdrop of rugged hills and a calm lake, creating an atmosphere of both grandeur and tranquility. As we delve into this historical narrative, we learn that despite Bonnie Prince Charlie's valiant efforts to reclaim the British throne with his organized army, he was ultimately unsuccessful. The rebellion came to a tragic end at Culloden where many Scots lost their lives. Bonnie Prince Charlie went into hiding until Flora MacDonald aided his escape to Europe where he spent his remaining years. This print by Joseph McKeown not only serves as a visual testament to this pivotal moment but also allows us to reflect upon Scotland's rich heritage and its enduring tales of bravery and resilience.
