Human skin showing hair follicles, LM
Hairy skin. Light micrograph of a thick section of human skin, showing three central hair follicles. The outer layer of the skin, the epidermis, is the thin, purple band, supported by the deeper, yellow, dermis. Beneath is the subcutaneous layer of connective tissue & fat. The epidermis grows down to form the lining of the hair shaft or follicle. The hair is rooted in an enlarged hair bulb, where actively dividing cells make the hair grow. Associated with the follicle is smooth muscle, to pull the hair erect in cold or fear, and sebaceous glands that secrete oily sebum. The latter are the orange globules along the follicles. Magnification: x25 when printed at 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of human skin, specifically focusing on the hair follicles. Through a light micrograph, we are able to observe three central hair follicles embedded within the layers of skin. The outermost layer, known as the epidermis, is depicted as a thin purple band that rests upon the deeper yellow dermis. Below these layers lies the subcutaneous layer composed of connective tissue and fat. The epidermis extends downwards to form a lining for each individual hair shaft or follicle. These hairs find their roots in enlarged hair bulbs where cells actively divide to promote growth. Alongside each follicle, smooth muscles can be seen which contract when exposed to cold or fear, causing hairs to stand erect. Additionally, sebaceous glands are present along the length of these follicles and can be identified by their orange globules in this image. These glands produce oily sebum that helps maintain healthy skin and hair. Photographed at a magnification of x25 when printed at 10 centimeters wide, this scientific marvel provides us with an up-close glimpse into our own bodies' remarkable complexity and functionality.
