Tardigrade, SEM

Water bear. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a water bear, or tardigrade (phylum Tardigrada). Water bears are small, water-dwelling, segmented micro-animals with eight legs that live in damp habitats such as moss or lichen. They are classed as extremophiles as they can survive dry conditions by changing into a desiccated state, in which they can remain for many years. Whilst in this form (known as a tun) they can withstand the most extreme environments and can tolerate radiation levels as high as x1000 more than other animals, including humans. They have even been brought back alive after spending 10 days in the vacuum of space. Magnification: x1000, when printed at 10 centimetres wide. Unleash your creativity and transform your space into a visual masterpiece. © Science Photo Library

EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases the incredible world of a tardigrade, also known as a water bear. The image, captured using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), reveals the intricate details of this tiny creature. Tardigrades are fascinating micro-animals that reside in watery environments like moss or lichen. With their segmented bodies and eight legs, they navigate through these damp habitats with ease. What sets them apart is their ability to survive extreme conditions by entering a desiccated state called a tun. In this form, they can endure dryness for years and withstand the harshest environments. Considered extremophiles, tardigrades possess remarkable resilience. They can tolerate radiation levels up to 1000 times higher than other animals, including humans. Astonishingly, some have even returned alive after spending ten days in the vacuum of space. The false-colored SEM image allows us to appreciate the beauty hidden within this minuscule organism's structure and features. When printed at ten centimeters wide with a magnification of x1000, every detail becomes vividly apparent. Steve Gschmeissner's skillful capture transports us into an unseen realm where nature's wonders unfold on a microscopic scale. This print serves as both an artistic masterpiece and an educational tool that invites viewers to marvel at the extraordinary capabilities possessed by these seemingly insignificant creatures - reminding us once again that there is so much more to our world than meets the eye.
