Church of San Millan with the sun backlighting. Segovia, Spain

The Romanesque tower forms the oldest remains of the temple, it corresponds to the eleventh century being Mudejar style, something that gives the building a distinctive character within the large number of Romanesque churches in the city, along with Zamora are the largest group of Spain. The rest of the building is the result of the reform carried out between 1111 and 1126 by Alfonso I Fighting during his rule in Castile by his marriage to Urraca, so it is one of the oldest churches in the city.
In 1985 the old city of Segovia and its Aqueduct were declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. The old city contains a multitude of historic buildings both civil and religious, including a large number of buildings of Jewish origin, notably within the old Jewish Quarter

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the Church of San Millan in Segovia, Spain, with the sun casting a beautiful backlighting effect. The Romanesque tower, dating back to the eleventh century and built in Mudejar style, stands as the oldest part of this remarkable temple. Its unique architectural features distinguish it from the numerous other Romanesque churches found throughout the city, making it one of Segovia's most distinctive landmarks. The rest of the church underwent significant renovations between 1111 and 1126 under Alfonso I Fighting's rule in Castile after his marriage to Urraca. As a result, this historic building is considered one of the oldest churches in Segovia. In recognition of its rich cultural heritage, UNESCO declared both the old city of Segovia and its famous Aqueduct as World Heritage Sites in 1985. The old city boasts an array of historically significant structures – both civil and religious – including many buildings with Jewish origins located within its ancient Jewish Quarter. This photograph beautifully showcases not only the architectural grandeur but also evokes a sense of tranquility and spirituality against a backdrop filled with vibrant colors and dramatic skies. It portrays three individuals – two boys accompanied by an adult – seemingly immersed in happiness while exploring this charming village steeped in history. Overall, this image encapsulates Spain's rich cultural tapestry through its stunning architecture, picturesque landscapes, and serene atmosphere—a perfect depiction for those seeking travel destinations that blend history with natural beauty.
