Acroterion with Temple of Zeus in Aizanoi

Aizanoi was an ancient city in western Anatolia. Located in what is now Cavdarhisar, Kutahya Province, Aizanoi is situated astride the River Penkalas, some 1, 000 m above sea level. The city was an important political and economic centre in Roman times; surviving remains from the period include a well preserved Temple of Zeus, unusual combined theatre-stadium complex, and macellum inscribed with the Price Edict of Diocletian. The city fell into decline in Late Antiquity. Later serving as a citadel, in 2012 the site was submitted for inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the majestic Acroterion with the Temple of Zeus in Aizanoi, an ancient city nestled in western Anatolia. Once a thriving political and economic hub during Roman times, Aizanoi boasted remarkable architectural marvels that have stood the test of time. The image showcases the well-preserved Temple of Zeus, a testament to the city's rich history and religious significance. The temple's grandeur is accentuated by its surroundings – an enchanting combination of blue skies and lush greenery. As sunlight bathes the ancient ruins, a sense of tranquility permeates through this snapshot from the past. Aizanoi's importance as a cultural site cannot be overstated; it was even proposed for inclusion on UNESCO's prestigious World Heritage List in 2012. This photograph allows viewers to immerse themselves in this historical gem, transporting them back to an era when empires rose and fell amidst these very columns. With no people present in the frame, one can fully appreciate the intricate details of this architectural masterpiece. Every column tells a story; every stone bears witness to centuries gone by. It serves as a reminder that while civilizations may crumble over time, their legacy endures through art and photography.
