Hans Brinker. Statue of a Dutch boy who saves his country by putting his finger in a leaking dike. Harlingen, the Netherlands Usually called Hans Brinker, the Dutch boy who saves his country by putting his finger in a leaking dike has no name in the American children's book by Mary Mapes Dodge. It is just one of the stories about Holland told in the 1865 book Hans Brinker, or The Silver Skates: A Story of Life in Holland. Other poems and novels about the boy, sometimes called Peter of Haarlem: The Leak in the Dike - 1873, by Phoebe Cary; The Hole in the Dike, by Norma Green; The Boy Who Held Back the Sea, by Lenny Hort. The Hans Brinker story is almost unknown in Holland and is an example of imported folklore. This sculpture was originally made for a 1962 Dutch film about Dutch - Belgian rivalry: De Zaak M.P. by Bert Haanstra. It is located at the ferry terminal in Harlingen in the Dutch province of Friesland. The sculptor: Johan Jorna. The official title: It Jonkje, which is The Little Boy in Frisian. In the Netherlands there are 2 more sculptures of the Boy with his Finger in the Dike: one in the village of Spaarndam, a district of the city of Haarlem; and one in the Madurodam amusement park in The Hague.
