Framed Print of George the cat keeps a watchful eye on Sydney through a pair of binoculars

George, a white cat who lives at the top of one of the pylon supports of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, keeps a watchful eye on the city through a pair of binoculars, January 1957. (Photo by Dennis Rowe/BIPs/Hulton Archive/Getty Images)
People who visited the Sydney Harbour Bridge Pylon Lookout during the 1950s and 1960s would remember, with affection, the world famous White Cats. This family of friendly felines lived in a cattage on the roof of the Pylon Lookout, (14 steps up a ladder from the Parapet Level). Here they had their own merry-go-round, roamed the roof garden and guarded a Wishing Well.
The cats belonged to Mrs Rentoul, who operated the Lookout at the time, and they soon became a popular attraction. Immerse yourself in the stunning allure of Australia through our exquisite art collection. © 2007 Getty Images
