JOHN JACOB ASTOR, 1825, by John Wesley Jarvis, painting, oil on canvas. He made a fortune in the fur trade. As a teenager, he emigrated from Germany to England, and then to the US after the Revolution. His American Fur Company successfully competed with the British Hudson Bay Company and Canadian North West Company. He was the founder of the fortune that launched the socially prominent Astor family of New York City (BSLOC_2019_9_169).
