Framed Print of THE KINGDOM OF CHINA, 1593, by Cornelis de Jode is based on the earlier work, A NEW DESCRIPTION OF CHINA, 1588, published in Abraham Orteliuss Theatrum Orbis Terrarum

THE KINGDOM OF CHINA, 1593, by Cornelis de Jode is based on the earlier work, A NEW DESCRIPTION OF CHINA, 1588, published in Abraham Orteliuss Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. This map has been rotated 90 degrees counter-clockwise, corresponding the European geographic conventions. It copies the tripartite division by mountain ranges, of India on left, China on right, Japan at far right, and northern lands of the Tartars on top. The four allegorical vignettes depict: a man fishing with a cormorant; Chinese family fishing boat with smoking chimney and domestic duck pen; a wind driven wheeled landship; and two men praying to a three headed deity.
