Framed Print of Worldly Folk Questioning Chimney Sweeps Master Before of Christ Church, Philadelphia. Watercolor by John Lewis Krimmel, 1811-13

Worldly Folk Questioning Chimney Sweeps Master Before of Christ Church, Philadelphia. Watercolor by John Lewis Krimmel, 1811-13. Young boys were small enough to crawl into chimneys to remove flammable creosote build-up. Masters often recruited apprentices from alms houses, who were then indentured to him for seven years. It was an hard and unhealthy job, and done by many African-Americans in the 19th century (BSLOC_2019_7_204). © https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/
