Illustration of the poem from "La Légende des siècles" XV, Eviradnus, XVII, "La massue", corerspondnat to the following passage: "The frightening young man laughs at the gray beard; / Sword in fist, joyful, radiant assassin, / Crossing his arms, he shouts: "Now it's my turn! "/ And the black knights, judges of this lice / Can see, two steps from the fatal precipice, / Near Mahaud, who seems an inanimate corpse, / Eviradnus unarmed and Sigismund armed. / The abyss awaits. One of them must fall into it. / "Let's see who the grave closes on, / Says Sigismund. You're the dead one! You're the dog!" / The moment is mournful; Eviradnus feels / That before he has chosen a sword from some suit of armor, / He'll have the rising point in his loins; / What to do? Suddenly on Ladislas lying / His eye falls; he smiles terribly, and, stooping / With the air of a caught lion finding his way out: / "Hey!" he says, "I don't need another club! "/ And, taking the king's corpse at his heels, / He marches up to the emperor, who staggers with fright; / He brandishes the dead king like a weapon, he plays with it, / He holds both feet in his two fists, and shakes / Above his head, murmuring: Tout beau! / This sort of horrible slingshot from the grave, / Whose body is the rope and head the stone. / The distraught corpse topples backwards, / And the dislocated arms make hideous gestures. / He shouts: "Settle, princes, between the two of you. / If hell were extinguished, in the universal shadow, / It would be rekindled, certe, with the spark / That can be drawn from a king colliding with an emperor." / Sigismund, under this hovering dead man, drunk with horror, / Steps back, unseeing, towards the gloomy trapdoor; / Suddenly the dead man falls and the corpse strikes... - / Eviradnus is alone. And we hear the sound / Of two spectres falling together in the night. / The nobleman bends at the threshold of the well, his eye plunges into it, / And, calm, he says softly, as if speaking in a dream: / "It's good! Disappear, tiger and jackal!" "
