This arboreal rodent is native to eastern and central regions of North America where it inhabits deciduous and mixed forests. As a seed predator, it primarily feeds on nuts, acorns, and seeds, creates food caches, and is referred to as "Écureuil brun" in the original French text. By Jacques Christophe Werner (1798-1856).
