7420001 Horatius defends the bridge. (print); (add.info.: Horatius defends the Pons Sublicius during the war between Rome and Clusium. There were a series of wars between the Romans and Etruscans, the War with Clusium happening circa 508 BC. When Lars Porsena, King of Clusium attacked Rome in that year and tried to enter the city by the Sublicius bridge, Publius Horatius Cocles and two others, Herminius and Lartius, held off the attackers while men behind them began to destroy the bridge. Herminius and Lartius retreated, Horatius fought until the bridge fell, then leapt into the river and swam to safety. After a 19th century work by Bartolomeo Pinelli.); Photo © Ken Welsh.
