This idealized, somewhat melancholy landscape explores the theme of the poetics of ruins brought into vogue by Claude Gellée and La Hyre. It is one of the few paintings attributed with certainty to Mauperché, one of France's finest mid-century landscape painters, who depicts a fantasy of ancient architecture, overgrown with vegetation and enlivened by picturesque details: flowerpots on a cornice, laundry drying, a pulley, on the edge of a marsh with reflections.The dark values of the rushes and dead branches in the foreground gradually lighten towards the diaphanous distance, according to the rules of aerial perspective. The figures with their slender silhouettes could represent the shepherd Theagenes gathering Chariclea on the banks of the Nile, a scene from Heliodorus famous novel "The Ethiopics".
