New classical style; His right hand points toward his breast, his left holds an open book in which the opening chapter of his Gospel is set in an early example of the ancient Roman letter forms in classical style. The apostle and evangelist Saint Matthew, who had been a tax collector before his calling to Christ, was a most appropriate patron for the bankers.
