Framed Print of Laboratory Created Diamond
(Original Caption). Created in the Laboratory. Schenectady, New York: The General Electric Company displayed for the first time today diamonds that have been created out of coal dust. Pictured is the largest diamond it has yet made. It is about one-sixteenth of an inch long in its longest dimension, and has been placed alongside a standard diamond high fidelity phonograph needle (top) to indicate its relative size. To produce the stones, General Electric scientists created a fifty-ton hydraulic press the conditions that exist miles below the Earth's surface. 1, 500, 000 pounds a square inch pressure and 5, 000 degree Fahrenheit temperature. The machine, called a private diamond mine, has produced a few carats of diamonds worth about ten dollars.
