(Original Caption) 1/30/1950-Climax, CO: Solar prominences, filamentary clouds of luminous gas, are photographed here at the edge of the sun by means of a coronagraph, a type of telescope which produces artificial eclipse of the sun within the instrument by use of a black disk. The pictures were obtained at the high altitude observatory of Harvard University and the University of Colorado, at Climax, Colo. under the direction of Dr. Walter O. Roberts.
