A wingswept Reconnaissance plane, the six jet RB 47E (a model of the B-47 Stratojet bomber shown here during a recent test) flew from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Wichita, Kansas, last week in fifteen minutes and 20 seconds. The flight over the 157 mile interstate course was noteworthy not only because it set an unofficial speed record between the two cities, but because the average speed of 622 miles an hour was maintained with the bomber's engines operated considerably below their maximum output. An innovation in the E-model Stratojets and the RB-47E's is the use of an approach chute. As the plane enters the landing pattern a large parachute attached to the tail is released at an altitude of about 1, 000 feet allowing the engines to revolve at high thrust rate without flying the plane at an extremely high speed.
