Arkins and members of his crew are pictured in lifeboat No. 1 in which they escaped from the sinking American ship Leigh after she was torpedoed and sent to the bottom of the Atlantic about 75 miles off Freetown Sierra Leone, Africa. Radio operators Samuel Hakam made this photograph. Captain Arkins is on the left Chief Steward McCauley is at the tiller, Junior third officer Newkirk is on the right.
