This Paul Barkshire photograph shows one of the two sphinxes at the base of Cleopatra's Needle on Victoria Embankment in London. The cast bronze sphinxes were designed by the architect George John Vulliamy. The ancient pink granite obelisk was transported from Egypt to London by sea and was erected on 12 September 1878.
