The small town of Tomar is dominated by the Convento da Ordem do Cristo, a mighty castle of the Knights of Christ, which has now been recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The castle was built between the 12th and 17th centuries and thus consists of different architectural styles. After the Templar Order was banned, it was de facto continued in Portugal as the Order of Christ the Knight, with Tomar, whose Templar castle was founded in 1160, as the centre of the order.
