Pierre-Auguste Renoir: Bather Drying Herself (Baigneuses essuyant), Pierre-Auguste Renoir, c. 1908, Oil on canvas, Renoir painted the female nude obsessively during the later part of his career. In hundreds of canvases, bathing figures, presented alone or in groups, perform intimate actions like getting dressed, pulling back hair, or drying off. Here, as in the vast majority of these canvases, the bather does not acknowledge the artist/ viewers presence but remains absorbed in her task, heightening the sense of voyeurism. Skin is soft and velvety-looking, an effect achieved through liquid-thin paint applied in short, delicate strokes; this a hallmark of Renoirs late works. Overall: 36 7/16 x 29 1/8 in. (92.5 x 74 cm).
