Framed Print of Mademoiselle Chauvin the first female barrister 1901

Mademoiselle Chauvin, the first female barrister, illustrated as she is sworn in at the French Bar. The Sphere describes the mixed reaction to Mdlle Chauvins right to practise, made apparent by M Magnaud, the President of the Tribunal at Chateau-Thierry who oversaw Chauvins first appearance on February 23rd. Magnaud reportedly welcomed Chauvin with the warning that the legal changes which had allowed for her appointment had not been received with equal enthusiasm by all her male confreres, however, the Tribunal as a whole praised the updated legislation.
