Flat Out! Its the time every speedster dreads - the moment when they realise they re no longer the tops. For Hortense, Britains fastest tortoise it happened on Thursday (24-3-77). But, then, she had rather a good excuse. For she was pitting her skills against three-year-old race-horses at the start of the Flat Horse racing season, at Doncaster. Naturally, the tortoise was left at the post. But thats only to be expected when you know that she hasn t been in strict training for six months. In fact, not since she out-plodded all-comers to romp away with the title of Britains fastest tortoise. But first she had to survive a sex-change scare. For the tortoise was entered for the race as Horace...and became Hortense after a sex test. Shes not quite as quick as last season said her owner and trainer Jim Oldfield of Rawmarsh, Yorkshire.
