British Glider borne troops march out to board their craft for take off in the first wave of the airborne attack on German defences in Normandy, Northern France.
British and American airborne troops and parachutists landed behind German defences at around 1.30 a.m on 6th June 1944, starting off D-Day.
On the night of the 5th, a force of 181 men, led by Major John Howard, took off from RAF Tarrant Rushton in Dorset, southern England in six Horsa gliders to capture Pegasus Bridge, and also Horsa Bridge, a few hundred yards to the east, over the Orne River.
