Framed Print of Indian Troops in camp in Derbyshire. The officer commanding the unit

Indian Troops in camp in Derbyshire.
The officer commanding the unit, inspecting the quarter guard.
They are members of the Royal Indian Army Service Corps (RIASC), mainly from the Punjab, who set up camp in the county during the Second World War.
The RIASC were a non-combative force which cared for and fed both animals and men and moved supplies. They were officially Animal Transport Companies, although known as Mule Companies.
After their service with the British Expeditionary Force in France and subsequent evacuation from the beaches of Dunkirk, around 500 men were sent to Shirley Common Camp on the Osmaston Estate, near Ashbourne, before some were dispersed to other similar facilities elsewhere..
