The German sent dozens of their best divisions, thousands of tanks, and thousands of planes against the city whose citizens became an impregnable wall in the path of the invader.
Bomb shattered buildings were fought for with unyielding ferocity, the Germans paying in fantastic casualties for gains of single houses.
Bombed from the air, pounded by heaviest siege guns, living in the ruins of their streets, the citizens endured an ordeal that is without equal in history.
In those bitter days of Stalingrads trial, the present great counter-attack was forged.
The defenders of Stalingrad are now not only defending their city, but driving the Fascists from the Volga,
