Framed Print of A Summers Day, Gurnards Head, Cornwall, David James (1853-1904)

Oil on canvas, English School, 1890. Gurnards Head is a long, narrow, headland near Treen, in the parish of Zennor, on the north coast of Cornwall. It is the site of an Iron Age promontory fort known as Trereen Dinas. Little has been recorded about David James, but it is certain that he was known during his lifetime as a maritime painter and that his main interest was in pure seascapes, particularly the motion of waves. He is also known to have worked extensively in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, very probably in St Ives. He is also known to have worked in Devon, Norfolk, North Yorkshire and South Wales. James had at least two paintings, A North Cornish Breaker and An Atlantic Roll, shown at the Royal Academy during the 1880s and is known to have exhibited there into the late 1890s.
